If you’re one of the millions of Americans that have turned to self-storage and storage units to fit their growing collection of material goods, then you need to watch out for a few things. Mistakes can happen often, especially when you’re looking at getting a storage unit and moving valuables into it.So to help you avoid making critical errors, here is a list of common storage mistakes that people new to storage make and how to avoid them:
  1. Not Having a Plan If you don’t have a plan before you start moving your items into a storage unit at a storage facility, you’re making a mistake. Shoving your items into a cheap storage unit somewhere isn’t the best move. You should look at the unit to get an idea of what you’re working with, and to get a feel for your unit’s size. Small units can mean having to avoid just bringing everything you’re not using the facility, after all. And you need to have a good sense of what you’ll fit into that small unit if it is a little on the cramped side check out our storage calculator to figure out how much storage space you really need .
  2. Failing To Label Everything You need to be efficient when you’re arranging your storage unit to prevent yourself from being confused when you return. Even if you memorized all the details of the unit and know where everything is, a few months could change that quickly. You should label all your belongings, especially if you’re hiring a company to transport them for you. It’ll also save you time if you’re coming and going between the unit and other locations from time to time. You’ll know where everything is already.
  3. Not Getting Enough Storage Upfront If you pick your unit without accurately judging how much you really need, you can actually find that you either have too large a unit or too small a unit. And while many facilities have small units to rent in addition, in 2016 it was stated that occupancy for storage facilities was at 87.4%, so you might be out of luck. You might need to get more space up front, or even less space, to save money in the long term.
These are just three of the more common storage rental mistakes that people make when they’re looking at getting a unit. Prevent yourself from making them by making sure you know them like the back of your hand.
